The compact crossover SUV segment is one of the most popular car segments in the world and a very competitive space for car manufacturers to outsell the competition. The all-new Tucson is on the charge to distinguish itself from the rest of the pack in terms of design and technology. This being Hyundai’s best-selling model globally, the look is completely unrecognizable and a massive departure from the previous model as they went for a bold, futuristic redesign for the new generation. It sits on a brand new platform that is shared throughout current Hyundai models.

Since its introduction in 2004, the Tucson has managed to sell 7 million units worldwide meeting all the requirements for space, practicality and comfort. The new one will be available on sale next year as a 2022 model with new additions of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.


The new design embodies creases and brave cut lines on the facet which can only be our description of this look. We think that the whole distinctive fascia will put the competition to sleep or have them rushing back to the drawing board to think about their approach in this segment. Hyundai says this is inspired by their very own Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy which keeps on evolving with newer models. On top of this form, it incorporates “parametric dynamics” seen with the diamond pattern on the front grille. Instead of designers having to create all the bases and shapes of the body, they aided computers to do most of the job and the end result is quite satisfying to be honest.

The daytime running lights are integrated into the “parametric grille” on the front which hides them when the lights are not lit, it looks clean and flush when parked. The side profile is all masculine with aggressive body creases and heading to the back you’re met with a strip taillight connecting dual rectangular lights which become visible when lit. A careful consideration of a long wheelbase model has been noted for some markets including Australia and it is 130 mm longer than the short wheelbase model which then accounts for better legroom space as an advantage.

There are seven colours available with only four available on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. They are White Cream, Phantom Black, Shimmering Silver and Intense Blue. Flame Red, Amazon Gray and Nocturne Gray are not available on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. There will be an N-Line model for the one’s who want a sportier look and hopefully we might also get a fully-fledged N version to take on the likes of the Tiguan R.


Currently there are only two engines listed on the press release which are familiar to Tucson customers with one of them mated to hybrid models. The 2.5-litre petrol 4-cylinder manages to produce 187 hp (139 kW) and 247 Nm of torque. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain are mated to the 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine producing 227 hp (169 kW) and 350 Nm of torque combined and also it comes with E-handling for better steering response.

The CVVD unit (Continuously Variable Valve Duration) allows the engine to perform better and have increased fuel efficiency. Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel drive system now comes with new modes for the difficult terrain such as Mud, Snow and Sand, whilst there existing modes for the road like Eco, Comfort, Smart and Sport for normal driving conditions.


Hyundai took their time to completely change the look of the inside, calling it an Interspace inspired interior and modernizing it, some may even say making it look a bit more futuristic. Firstly, you’ll notice a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster without a cover on top and the worry would be the reflections from the outside which would make it difficult to see the information displayed on the screen. However, they say that they used anti-glare on both screens to ensure the driver can see everything on the screens at all times. The infotainment screen is no longer slapped in a tablet form but rather integrated into the dash and it is sized at 10.25 inches as well.

It features a new system that comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it has a multitasking interface that allows different menus to show up at the same time and it has a redeveloped navigation system. The dash material is said to be more upmarket with a soft touch feel to it to make the cabin feel more premium. Adding to that classy look, the Tucson comes with heated seats and heated steering wheel, no shift knob but buttons to select gears on the automatic model, smartphone wireless charging with cooling and Bose Premium Sound System.

The car now comes with a digital key app that allows the driver to lock and unlock the doors via the phones NFC feature and that also starts the engine. The Car-to-home feature allows the driver to control home appliances with remote control functionality and set them up just right when he/she is about to arrive home. The air condition has multi-air ventilation system that cleans air in the cabin to provide a fresh, clean atmosphere.

The direction that Hyundai is taking with the new Tucson has to be commended as they are approaching the market with an interestingly looking SUV. South Africans will gladly welcome a fresh looking SUV into the market and hopefully it will sell well as the previous generation.
