Dodge recently unveiled three new models and they are not exactly new but are existing models with more powerful engines and a rad name change, example is the new Challenger Super Stock. Amongst them is what I believe has to be the latest insane car ever by Dodge, an SUV with over 700 hp. We have seen the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with that much power but its brother the Durango SRT-8 Hellcat gets even more power and by the way, they are related and fall under one organization, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

The 6.2-litre HEMI “Hellcat” V8 engine has been borrowed from the Challenger Hellcat and stuffed into the Durango and in return, it produces 710 hp (529 kW) at 6 100 rpm and 875 Nm of torque. It produces more power than a Lamborghini Huracan Perfomanté, it has the same horsepower as a McLaren 720S and officially it is the most powerful production SUV ever made. Kudos to Dodge for being this ambitious and that was achieved by screwing a 2.4-litre capacity supercharger on top of the V8 engine along with an updated air cool duct.

The power is shifted on a smooth 8-speed automatic TorqueFlite transmission with all the power sent to all four wheels. It sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 290 km/h. A quarter-mile time has been set by the Durango Hellcat and verified by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) with a time of 11.5 seconds.

The exterior design is inspired much by the Charger Widebody with some mildly flared wheel arches. The new front-end design is more aggressive than the pre-facelift, there are LED headlights with dedicated LED daytime running lights, Brembo brakes, and a rear spoiler. The towing capacity is said to be around 4000 kilograms but just imagine how much fuel that will be consumed when doing heavy-duty jobs with a 6.2 litre V8 SUV, not that ideal.

The inside is much plusher and sportier as the centre console has been wrapped and stitched with leather. The instrument panel has been changed along with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system that can be controlled on a 10.1-inch touchscreen and it said to be five times faster than the previous system in responding to commands.

The Durango Hellcat is definitely not coming to SA if you’re thinking that it would stand a chance in projecting good sales but it won’t. We already have the Trackhawk and it’s doing fairly well with sales but not that great compared to competitors such as the BMW X5 M.
