It’s Alive! Meet The All-New BMW 4 Series Coupe

The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe showed face today and it had a lot of people talking about one bizarre feature on it. You guessed it, the large kidney grille which is intended to give the 4 Series a distinctive look in order to set it apart from the 3 Series G20. In fact, it looks nothing like the 3 Series and for that we have to applaud the BMW design team. The new design language for future BMW cars starts with the new 4 Series and what a remarkable look this has. People were tired of car manufacturers using the same design cues on all their cars but BMW has caught up on that and made a bold move to stick bugs bunny’s teeth on the front.

Enough about the grille and let’s discuss what the BMW 4 Series is in the model line-up. The new one is in its second generation and it is the Coupe version of the 3 Series. It replaced the E92 Coupe generation with the first-gen 4 Series back in 2013. The new one is said to be much more dynamic than it’s sibling as it sits 21 mm lower and has a rear 23 mm wider track than the 3 Series. BMW has also stated that it has a much sharper character than the previous 4 Series and perfects what a Coupe is.

Six engines have been announced with three petrol engines and one diesel engine expected to be launched in October 2020 and the two six-cylinder diesel engines will be sold next year starting from March. A 48-volt starter generator which is capable of providing an extra 11 hp (8 kW) has been added to all diesel engines and the range topping M440i, and it is there to help with engine response and efficiency. All engines get an 8-Speed Steptronic Automatic transmission as standard.


Let’s talk numbers, the 420i has a 2.0 litre turbopetrol in-line 4-cylinder engine producing 184 hp (135 kW) & 300 Nm of torque and it sprints from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 240 km/h. Step up to the 430i and you get the same engine displacement but with more power at 258 hp (190 kW) and 400 Nm of torque which is enough to push it from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h, and please note that these two models are rear-wheel drive.

One diesel engine will be available at launch and it will be fitted in the 420d which is also in the 420d xDrive, so that’s two versions. The engine is a 2.0 litre turbodiesel in-line 4-cylinder producing 190 hp (140 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. The rear-wheel drive version does 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds with a top speed of 240 km/h whilst the four-wheel drive version does a sprint time of 7.4 seconds with a lower top speed of 238 km/h. The 430d xDrive has a power output of 286 hp (210 kW) and 650 Nm of torque and the M440d xDrive makes 340 hp (250 kW) and 700 Nm of torque, both from a 3.0 litre turbodiesel straight-six engine but these models will be launched in March 2021.

The big daddy M440i xDrive is a sleeker version of the brilliant M340i which has one of the best current BMW engines, the B58 3.0 litre turbopetrol straight-six engine. It produces an astonishing 374 hp (275 kW) and 500 Nm of torque going to all four wheels and propelling the car from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 Seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h.


P90390035_highRes_bmw-m440i-xdrive-arcThe 4 Series is 128 mm longer and 27 mm wider than its predecessor. It has a wheelbase of 2 851 mm which is a 41 mm increment from the last one. It is also taller with the height being increase by 6 mm. This proves that the BMW 4 Series is bigger and those improvements in size means a better interior space.

I have talked about the kidney grille because that is the first noticeable exterior feature and the reason why it’s there is not to suck all the air on the highway but it is ushering a new era of BMW designs which is a resemblance of the past BMW kidney grille found on the 1940 BMW 328 Coupe, are you still with me? The headlights design is much slimmer with LED lights that come as standard and the adaptive LED lights with laserlights are an option. The body reminds me of the 8 Series Coupe and obviously, this is basically a baby 8 Series Coupe. The side profile is sleek and beautiful and as you head to the back it gets more epic with a gorgeous rear end complemented by L-shaped LED taillights.

There are two exterior trims that are available with the 4 Series and that is the Sport-Line and M-Sport. As standard, you get 17-inch alloy wheels which can be upgraded to 18-inch M alloys with the M-Sport package and can be increased to a further 19-inch in size with the M-Sport Package Pro and that is a new trim package premiering for the first time on any BMW model. Overall, the design is superb but some may need time to get used to the large grille.


P90390053_highRes_the-all-new-bmw-4-seThere is not much to be said either than it being the same design like on the 3 Series but with a crammed rear passenger seating. As standard there is a traditional analogue instrument cluster accompanied by an 8.8-inch infotainment screen. Get the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional which comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen that has gesture control and satellite navigation. The seats have been redesigned to be sportier and are wrapped in cloth covers as but can be optioned with Vernaseca leather or BMW individual Merino leather. The steering wheel looks similar like on every M-Sport BMW model and typically wrapped in leather.


Other interesting features include ambient lighting, an LED welcome carpet that lights up every time you open the door at night, Harman & Kardon surround sound system and 3-zone climate control. There is an option for a tilting and sliding sunroof option if you want a mini open top. Standard safety systems are a lot here and that includes land departure warning and front collision but there are options you can choose from like steering and lane control assist with active navigation. The heads-up display has been improved and now shows more information.

Back to the M-Sport Package Pro, it comes with adaptive M suspension, M sport brakes with a choice of red or blue brake calipers and an M differential. There is still the lesser M-Sport Package which comes with a standard M suspension.

South Africa is expected to receive only three models at launch which is the 420i, 420d and M440i xDrive. Prices will be revealed at the launch and expect the base model to cost around R750 000 if not more.
