You’ve asked for it and Toyota has answered your prayers. The new Toyota Supra A90 has officially launched in South Africa and we are happy to announce that the trim models we are receiving are very much exquisite. There’s a Toyota GR Supra Track, Toyota GR Supra and Toyota Supra Matte Grey edition which is my personal favourite amongst the three. Of course, I did not attend the launch but there are some few things I can tell you about it.

We all know that the Supra is based on the BMW Z4 G29 platform and many fans were quite disappointed when they found out, but remember that the Supra is a sports car and Toyota turning to BMW for some help to make the ultimate sports car was the best decision made. Ever since the Mk4 ended production 17 years ago, there have been high fan requests to have the Supra nameplate resurrected.

All model trims come with the BMW borrowed 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six cylinders with 335 hp (250 kW) and 500 Nm of torque but I suspect the engine produces even more power and I think Toyota is only hiding the fact that the B58 engine is more capable in the Supra than it is in the BMW Z4 M40i. There will be a second engine option to launch later on this year which is a 2.0 liter inline-4 cylinder and with an expected power output of 195 kW.

Sorry purists, the Supra A90 has no manual gearbox on offer instead it has an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission courtesy of BMW, again. Let’s just get it out of the way, the Supra consists of a BMW steering wheel alongside BMW turn signal lever and light switch buttons. It also extends to the infotainment system, screen, and controls but Toyota has modified those features for a more Toyota appeal. The Matte Grey Edition has high-end features such as a 12-speaker JBL system, Heads-Up display, wireless charging, and heated Alcantara-upholstered seats.

Many features will come as standard on the Supra. Some of the features include automatic rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, and a rear-view camera. Toyota has intended to make the Supra a more posh car, with leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and because it got help from BMW, the quality will be just right.

Toyota Supra is bringing three trim models to South Africa and already prices have been revealed. The prices here are via Khulekani On Wheels and you can expect it in showrooms at Toyota dealerships nationwide.
